Math-continue Unit 6
In this unit, students deepen their understanding of place value relationships of numbers in base ten, unit conversion, operations on fractions with unlike denominators, and multiplicative comparison. The work here builds on several important ideas from grade 4.
In grade 4, students learned the value of each digit in a whole number is 10 times the value of the same digit in a place to its right. Here, they extend that insight to include decimals to the thousandths. Students recognize that the value of each digit in a place (including decimal places) is 110 the value of the same digit in the place to its left.
This idea is highlighted as students perform measurement conversions in metric units.
Previously, students learned to convert from a larger unit to a smaller unit. Here, they learn to convert from a smaller unit to a larger unit. They observe how the digits shift when multiplied or divided by a power of 10 and learn to use the exponential notation for powers of 10 to represent large numbers.

One key element of the May 7 bond proposal, is the establishment of an early childhood center in our district. Through the strategic and master planning processes stakeholders expressed concerns about our crowded elementary schools and the need for high quality, accessible preschool and before-and after-school programs. If the bond is supported by our community and the ECC is opened, the young five and early childhood special education programs operating at the elementary schools would move into the ECC. This would open up one to two classrooms at each elementary school, alleviating some of the existing crowding. With an in-district preschool program, participating students, who choose to continue their education in the St. Joseph Public Schools will have the opportunity to transition into young fives or kindergarten due to having experienced curriculum, instruction, and expectations which are tightly aligned to those that are a part of our K-5 elementary schools. In addition, young five and early childhood special education students, have unique developmental needs and learning styles which are best supported in facilities specifically designed to meet those needs. It is known that employees lacking reliable childcare more frequently miss work and experience greater levels of stress. An ECC could improve retention and well-being of SJPS employees by providing employees with reliable access to high-quality preschool and before- and after-school programs. Overall, an early childhood center will alleviate crowding at our three elementary schools, provide a specifically designed environment to meet the unique learning needs of our youngest students, allow for a transition into our elementary schools, create needed space to operate preschool and childcare programs and provide an opportunity to improve employee retention and well-being. |

This week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of OPM - Supporting Others.
Supporting other people when they struggle is a critical piece of being human. There is a Chinese saying that sums this up: “If you want happiness for an hour, take a nap. If you want happiness for a day, go fishing. If you want happiness for a year, inherit a fortune. If you want happiness for a lifetime, help somebody.” There are many different approaches to helping people who are struggling. These can include: listening while they describe an event and their feelings about it, taking action to help people in need, or simply just being there and sitting together in silence. Talking through a problem is a common way to help a person who is going through a tough time. When thinking about how to help them through conversation, it can be useful to (a) validate, rather than dismiss, their feelings, (b) help them reappraise the situation, and (c) *carefully* point out logic/thinking errors that may block them from healing. |
