Math-continue Unit 6
In this unit, students deepen their understanding of place value relationships of numbers in base ten, unit conversion, operations on fractions with unlike denominators, and multiplicative comparison. The work here builds on several important ideas from grade 4.
In grade 4, students learned the value of each digit in a whole number is 10 times the value of the same digit in a place to its right. Here, they extend that insight to include decimals to the thousandths. Students recognize that the value of each digit in a place (including decimal places) is 110 the value of the same digit in the place to its left.
This idea is highlighted as students perform measurement conversions in metric units.
Previously, students learned to convert from a larger unit to a smaller unit. Here, they learn to convert from a smaller unit to a larger unit. They observe how the digits shift when multiplied or divided by a power of 10 and learn to use exponential notation for powers of 10 to represent large numbers.
A message from Principal RommelHappy Sunday!
The Brown School PTO has created an exciting plan for a great week ahead (image shared below.) I want to thank them for living our 'All Means All' vision. This is exemplified in creating ways to show gratitude that are approachable for every one of our students and families. Teaching is hard work and the national narrative around public education can be demoralizing for a staff. Thanks to all of our families for insulating our Brown School staff with your kind words, positive mindset, and student centered actions. Of course the biggest way to appreciate our teachers is go get out and vote this Tuesday!
Go Bears!
P.S. Please join me in welcoming Hilary Cunningham as the next school social worker to Brown School. Hilary is currently completing her year at New Buffalo Schools, as their school social worker, and is excited to join our staff as soon as possible. |

John Hall Elementary Track MeetThe John Hall Elementary Track Meet is an event that takes place each year. It is a track-and-field competition between the three elementary schools, all students in 3rd-5th grades participate. Each student will participate in 4 events: 60-meter dash, 100-meter dash, Running Long Jump & Softball Throw. Classes will cycle through these four stations. The final event is the class relay. Each classroom fields a girl's relay team and a boy's relay team for a 400-meter relay. This is fun to watch, as all the non-participating students are in the stands cheering for their school! If you are able to help volunteer for the meet please click on the link below. We encourage parents in the lower grades K-2nd to volunteer if possible. Parents are welcome to cheer on the kids as well. Events are scheduled to start about 11:30 am at St. Joseph High School.

This week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Perserverence.
Perseverance means you complete what you start despite obstacles. You never give up. The concept of perseverance can most often be found in one’s active pursuit in overcoming obstacles. Perseverance is a uniquely human characteristic that identifies an individual’s ability to spend long periods of time devoted to a single goal or set of goals. Those who persevere are able to set goals for themselves and then take active, calculated steps toward those goals. People demonstrating high levels of perseverance are able to handle significant, sometimes repeated, setbacks in pursuit of goals. |

 | Kids Triathalon | A fun and challenging triathlon in which your little ones can compete! Open to children ages 4-14. The triathlon with include a 50-yard swim, half-mile bike ride, and a half-mile run. After crossing the finish line, enjoy activities inside the track, support and congratulate fellow racers, and attend the awards ceremony for the top winners of each age division. The 2024 Kids Triathlon promotes a healthy and active lifestyle for children throughout the entire SouthWest Michigan region. There will be one swimmer per lane, per heat and lifeguards will be on duty to ensure the safety of all participants. For those children under the age of 6, a guardian is allowed in the pool to assist their child. One guardian per swimmer is allowed on the pool deck for all ages.
